watched Hott Fuzz yesterday, enjoyed it, didnt expect it to like it was however, much more serious that Shaun of the Dead. Timothy Dalton's character was great!
saw slumdog millionaire today in london, was a really great film! after seeing all the awards it won i hoped that it would live up to expectations, and it did!
PROS
- Excellent period detail, until I turned and noticed Liam next to me I had actually forgotten that I wasn't in a 1930's New Orleans brothel
- There were a few good bits that reminded you of what David Fincher can do. Have you ever seen a soldier come back to life? No, no you haven't
CONS
- The end was so goddamn depressing I tried to hang myself at home but couldn't do the knot properly so just collapsed to the floor, then started weeping
- Not as good as it should be. There were loads of bits where it could've veered off and become great but instead it just yawned its way back to tedium
- He has a secret Russian affair with the most boring woman in the world
God I was so depressed I had to go home and watch zombies get decapitated by a helicopter.
Ellie got me Deathproof and Planet Terror for valentines (I got her sex in the city. I win)
Deathproof
Is Kurt Russell slashing girls up with his car basically. It’s done in a really grimy exploitation style and the film has been distressed so it looks like the print has been taken round 50 states already before you see it. It really fits the style of the film which harks back to the 70's both in style and content.
Until the mid point where it suddenly changes. It goes all clean and modern and the fashion changes (apart from Russell). The second part plays out with almost exactly the same story as the first half but without the charm and with more inane tarintino chat. Really I think they could have combined both story’s cut out 20 mins of black sass natter and it would have been a better film.
Planet Terror
Is a much more simple film. Naveen Andrews is a scientist who has invented zombie gas and an antidote and plans to sell the gas to the army and the antidote to someone else. In a completely unexpected turn of events the gas gets out in Americas Deep South and hicks start getting brain obsessed left right and centre.
Throw in a convict gun slinger and a girl with a machine gun for a leg and you’ve got a decent zombie gross out action film.
The style is the same as in death proof except they commit more. The whole film is done in the style and there is even a missing reel. The screen goes blank right in the middle of a love scene an apology message for the missing reel and when we come back the sex is over and the diner they were holding up in is on fire.
Touches like this make the second film much better in my opinion so if you’re watching them both together (which you’re supposed to) watch Planet Terror seccond.
I really don't know why the reviews slated this so much. The film is great fun, very funny, has an excellent soundtrack and basically just makes you wish you were a rogue DJ living on a boat in the shitty North Atlantic. The critics that I read pointed out the fact the characters seem to be having too much fun. What? Don't they realise that makes them sound just like the political killjoy panto-villain of the film (hilariously played by Kenneth Branagh)? I normally hate Richard Curtis films but this was ultimately a great laugh with faces from all my favourite films and shows. The few rare corny bits are the only reason I don't give this a ten.

I went to see Monsters Vs Aliens last week with my nephew.. the 3D version obviously! Now, I had gone to see Bolt 3D a few weeks before that and as the first positive for the film the 3D stuff was better in MVsA! the opening scene in space looked amazing and there were a few other bits throughout the film which made good use of the 3D effect. Bolt on the other hand didn't need any of the 3D stuff in it, and actually made it look worse. Dark scenes were too dark which is a "side affect" of putting things in 3D and generally there weren'y any stand out 3D moments.
back to MVsA! After seeing the previews i was really looking forward to a laugh a minute childrens comedy but instead most of it was pretty boring. The first hour of the film was quite slow and then it all went really quickly! I didn't think the story line was too great and it was all a bit hurried at the end. the funny moments were really funny but as usual.. they were all the bits in the previews.
Bolt on the other hand was hilarious. the little hamster sidekick(Rhino) stole it for me! great story too which sort of borrowed elements of toy story but still had an original edge to it.
If only Bolt could have made better use of the 3D!
Scores on the doors for both:
Monster vs Aliens- 6/10
Bolt- 8.5/10
To be honest I think 3D is going to end up another fad! _________________ Neil is wondering why he has woken up to find he is being drawn naked by a group of sixth form students!
Saw 'In the Loop' last night. It's pretty much the film of The Thick of It and is ludicrously funny. A wonderful barrage of one-liners so perfectly sculpted that my repeating them here would only devalue them. I actually pissed myself numerous times. Messy.
