Paint The Town Review: by Iván Gonzalez

Major Major - Paint The Town

I open my letterbox and to my surprise I find a large brown envelope. This is always a pleasure, as receiving post lets me escape from the monotony that daily tasks hold. “What’s inside?” I hear you ask. Well, I’ll let you know; in the depths of the brown bag of joy lay the latest Major Major offering, four tracks on one compact disk entitled Paint The Town. It takes me roughly seven minutes to make my way back into my room and put it into the stereo. Before I press play I notice that in total it is exactly twelve minutes long. At an average of three minutes a song, these boys don’t plan on beating about the bush.

I was right. I think. To be honest I wasn’ t given much time to think. The music hit me from the moment I pressed that button. Punchy, hypnotic disco beats and funky bass lines run around your head as the guitars and vocals smash through it. Major Major have written quite a musical feast, and this is the menu:

Starters: The Fixer

A rhythmically enchanting melody placed on a bed of heavy pounding drums that will have you jiving about the room in no time. This song uses organic witty lyrics, sprinkled with hand claps and anthemic crowd shouts. A fantastic way of starting off, it does not intend on being a polite “hello” but more of a rough greeting that two tramps with contempt for each other might use.

Sorbet: Hangman

Clearing the pallet, this track juxtaposes soothing layers, harmonies and a deconstruction of instruments, with a beautiful smattering of dirty guitar and spiteful lyrics. The tale of this pathetic character is quite easily lost if you let yourself drift along with the music; once you listen to the narrative however, you will find there’s quite a sinister aftertaste.

Main Course: Newspapers And Magazines

An absorbing rhythm section entices and delights as a delectably flowing story comes to fruition. This song in its purest of forms is great. That is until it reaches 2:29 when it becomes amazing. Please serve this track as loud as possible, it deserves nothing less. The screams from band members and guitars alike take us into a musical brawl, which sadly lasts under a minute and leaves us wanting much more. Not suitable for vegetarians.

Dessert: Espadrilles

A finale worthy of kings, this dessert is definitely high in calories, however you should be able to work them off easily from the trance-like dancing it may cause. It astounds me that it is really as short as it is, managing to take us on quite an epic journey, yet still keeping that Major Major essence. A wonderful way to finish the twelve minute feast.

Paint The Town is musical catharsis at its best. It captures most of what the band are about, but there is still something missing, that final chocolate mint and coffee at the end of the meal. This, however, will only ever be attained from their electrically charged live shows. So what are you waiting for? Stop reading this crap and go go go…
